“Colin Do …… Ko, Colin. Saji is staying with his master today. He was happy to report it.”

“I see. Perhaps the master considers Saji an apprentice and not just a chore.”

It has been more than a month since Colin arrived, and Vera still can’t get used to calling him that. She was told, ‘You don’t need to use honorific,’, but it’s still too awkward for her, who was a loner not too long ago. However, Colin and Al, aren’t bothered by this. As such, Colin does not call Vera by her name either.

“By the way, Lady Vera. Have you heard anything from Al-sama about what you would do if you were offered a contract of indentured servitude from the workplace or where your children are currently working ……?”

“No, No such talk from Al-sama.   is it about contract?”

Although the younger group is still in the category of helping out, the older ones are getting used to their workplaces in their own way, where they are now working in various decent places. They originally received a certain amount of education from Deacon Franz, and now have made some connections to Nobles through Al from the south. Aside from their origins, their credibility is different.

The groundwork is laid for them to be properly judged on the basis of their abilities, words, and deeds. For example, Cyrus was once offered a job at the bar where he works, but Cyrus himself politely declined. He said he politely declined the offer because it might have been a joke over a drink.

“Yes. I am not familiar with the norms at Royal Capital, but Cyrus and the others work hard. They are also overly polite and help the commoners. It is not surprising that they received offers.

Saji also works in Craftsman Street, but it is the workshop of the furniture maker that you have been visiting lately, isn’t it? I spoke to him once, and he said that his children and apprentices have all become full-fledged artisans by now, and have left the nest, and that he and his wife are now running the shop. He also said that he would close the shop in his lifetime. …… He is so good that he has a shop in the artisan street of the royal capital, even if it is in a town full of outsiders. Is he not interested in someone else taking over the shop?

Well, I don’t know if Saji will be as good if he becomes an apprentice. …… But he seemed to want to take up an apprenticeship again.”

Vera often looked after everyone but didn’t pay much attention to the outside world. Colin, on the other hand, was more focused on the outside as he was “allowed” to do menial tasks and would be welcomed as a guardian.

The roles are now somewhat different. At first Vera was depressed about her own failure and was depressed for a while, but she has recovered a little.

“……I need to talk to Al-sama sometime,  Colin, I’m sorry. I didn’t understand all that. I am ashamed. ……”

“Those who fight for a living do not have to worry about every little detail. Al-sama doesn’t mind. He used to say, “Don’t be like those crazy Falconer guys. …… But if you ask me, Al-sama is most Falconer-like when he’s flipped, but he’ll deny it with all his might if you say it to him. . That’s the funny thing.”

Colin laughs lightly, recalling the past. Vera has grown accustomed to their air of quirkiness, but she can’t imitate them herself. As a squire, such a thing would be ……. Of course, that is normal, but looking at Al and Colin, she feels as if she is wrong. Seriously.

****

“Huh? An undertaking? Of Cyrus and the others?”

Colin and Vera were consulted immediately. They caught Al, who had recently been wandering around the academy and civilian areas, to talk to him.

“The reaction. I knew you hadn’t thought about it, had you?”

“……Yes, ofcource, I am thinking!”

Aside from being a white-knuckle sore loser, Al also realized when he was told. They didn’t have to spend all their lives in the guild. Rather, we should also help them to become independent.

“…… So? Have they come to you with specifics?”

“There are no specifics yet. However, it is possible that Saji may have go from being a domestic worker on the artisan street to an apprentice to a specific master. If that happens, there will be talk of a contract.

According to Master Al, there is no need to keep them here as long as there is a means of getting information. Rather, we should send him away if the conditions are good and he wants to.”

Al has the nobleman’s true motto of helping the powerless. In fact, on Falconer’s territory, this was the norm, if only because it was a harsh environment in which the powerless would otherwise have died in droves.

These days I get information through the Cyrus guild and others, and I also collect things like quests. The content is often bloody and disgusting, but…

However, Al does not think of tying up Cyrus and his friends because the guild is doing well.

So how exactly do we do that? …… and, if you ask me, I’ll show you how clunky this is.

“Hm, might be a bit early, but maybe I should talk to that Master about it sometime? I would also have to talk to Saji himself to see if he wants to.”

“Yes, that’s right. It would be better for Al-sama to show his face than for me, the messenger boy, to go there. I don’t know if that is the right thing to do, because I am not familiar with how things are done here.”

Colin glances at Vera as he says this. Unfortunately, Vera doesn’t know about such things, either, and just shakes her head.

“I am sorry. I don’t know the actual facts of such exchange either. ……”

“Well, that would be true. It’s not the kind of thing you need in the shadow of a royal family. There’s nothing to apologise for. Anyway, I’ll go say hello to that master in the near future.”

A daily routine for Al and his colleagues.

****

Today, Al wanders around the artisan street in the town of the outsiders in the fourth district of the royal capital……. Since it was out of the blue, he went to the workshop of a furniture artisan where Saji’s working, with the light-hearted intention of saying hello and making an appointment for later today.

“No, not at all. If you’re busy, we can do it later.”

“Oh, no! I couldn’t waste the time of a man of noble birth!”

Neither Al nor Colin knew.

The reason Al had never really realized it before was partly because people around him thought he was just a commoner in a slightly better part of the city. The only person who is closely involved is Vargas, the owner of the Angus Inn. No one bothered to point this out to him.

Even Vera is not familiar with this area, as she has only been surrounded by people associated with the nobility. Unlike Al, in her case, she was seen by those around her as having ‘something going on’ and was being cared for, but it seems to have been a reality.

Yes, as soon as I identified myself as Saji’s guardian, this is…… It’s kind of annoying. Isn’t it the opposite effect that I came to?.

Al is also perplexed. At first they greeted each other normally and said that Saji was in their care, but as soon as He learned that Al himself was Saji’s guardian, Man’s attitude changed drastically.

This is natural from the master’s point of view. He had been informed that Saji’s guarantor was a Noble.

“I’m kind of sorry. I may be related to the nobility, but I am still a simple countryman from the borderlands. I am not someone to be so afraid of.”

“Well, it doesn’t work like that! You, who are connected to the nobility, are a magician. You are our guardians!”

“……No, but…”

“But, but ……!”

****

Somehow, Al managed to pacify the master, and although it took some time, they were able to talk to each other normally. However, Al was very worn out.

“Erm,  I’m here to greet you as Saji’s guardian. That’s really all I’m doing. Saji often talks about how much he is looked after by his master and the other people on Craftsman Street,  so.”

“Oh, really? I thought I was going to be beaten up rudely. …… Oh! No, I don’t think so!”

Hey, hey, is there such a thing as a rude strike in the royal capital? …… That’s bad, Dear nobles, If you still want to do it, just let the nobles intrigue with each other. That is not the way to exercise power…….

Although it is not a very frequent occurrence, there is indeed such a thing in the royal capital as disrespectful revenge against commoners by the Nobles. They may also use it as a glimmer to force an unfavourable deal. It is rather more common that way.

“Such things” often happen when those nobility come to the shopping streets and artisanal streets of the outlying towns.

The worst thing is that such people are relatively well mannered in popular quarters, where their spheres of life overlap. In the nobles’ quarters, there is even a tendency to regard such behavior as out of bounds. The caution of the master is the correct form for a person from a town of outsiders.

“I’m a member of a noble family from the frontier, and I didn’t even know there was such a thing. Circumstances led me to protect the group that Cyrus and Saji were holed up in, and I’m just worried about their future. I came here to say hello to you as their guardian, because there might be talk of taking them on as apprentices or contractors in the future.”

A little calmer now, the master …… Tim is finally able to let Al’s story sink in.

“Heh? So, then, Mage-sama, do you intend to let Saji go out?”

“Eh? Yes. Of course. My squire told me to let him go if the conditions are good and if he wants to, and if it’s for his own good, I’d be happy to do it too. ……”

Tim, a furniture maker. A man who is approaching old age.

His children and apprentices have left the nest. His son, although employed, has become the owner of a small shop in the People’s District, and his apprentices have made a name for themselves in the western district.

His children come to visit him, and he looks forward to his apprentices sending him news, but Tim still thinks. ‘I wanted them to take over the shop’.

Hearing Al’s story, Tim suddenly got up from his chair, crawled onto the floor, and bowed. He got down on his knees.

“Hey! W-What happened suddenly?’

‘Mage-sama! Saji works hard! He’s got a good backbone, too! If Mage-sama is going to let Saji out, I’d like to take him in by all means! I will accept him as my apprentice …… or even as my family! Please!”

Al and Colin’s miscalculation. It is not a matter of possibly having an offer to take him in. The master had given up on the idea of taking him on as an apprentice. If a nobleman is the source of the contract, it is not possible to call on him.

“For real?’   So you are saying that Master Tim was willing to accept Saji as an apprentice?’

“….. Yes! He’s a little guy, but he’s got a good eye. He works hard on top of that. I thought he would be able to inherit my skills as an apprentice. However, I heard that the Mage Master was his contractor, so I thought it would be impolite …… to mention it.”

Having the backing of a person connected to the nobility is, on the contrary, not very popular in a town of outsiders. However, at the request of Vargas, who is the face of the neighborhood, the artisan street accepted Saji as one of the domestic helpers.

At first, Tim thought that Saji was just a cold-hearted person, but Saji himself is not just a commoner, but a former homeless. For someone like that, he works hard, listens well, and apologizes when he makes mistakes. These are normal things, but many people are not able to do so. Saji was very well behaved.

Tim had thought about making Saji his apprentice. but he knew it, but he couldn’t bring himself to say so, and there was no way he could be wicked, so he kept an eye on Saji.

“Okay …… For now, please stand with your head up. If you’ve thought that far ahead, I guess the rest is up to Saji’s will. I’m sorry, but even though you’re the main source of the contractor, it’s not something you and I can decide alone.”

“But of course! If Saji says no, that is. Neither I nor my wife would ever treat him badly just because Saji turned us down!”

Al was slightly taken back by Tim’s enthusiasm, but casually thought that Saji himself could…… if he wanted to.

Hmmm …… it seems Saji’s reception is better than I thought. Perhaps a similar story has come to Cyrus? Like misunderstanding this time, the other party afraid to say it? In the meantime, I think I’ll check with Vargas-san about that.

Are you saying that people who didn’t know what was going on thought I was a commoner? Come to think of it, I don’t remember ever saying my name too.   Tim was normal until I explained it to him, too.  Even Mary, the assassin, thought of me as a non-mage.  Was that not only because of the amount of mana, but also because of the atmosphere thing? When you think about it, does that mean that Cyrus and the others were smarter in this area?..

Al finally knows how he was seen. But that doesn’t mean he’s particularly bothered it now.
